You're definitely onto something with the filter changes—simple but overlooked. I used to think it was just marketing hype until I saw the difference firsthand. Had tenants complaining about uneven cooling, swapped out a filthy filter, and boom... problem solved. Consistent maintenance is underrated; luck might help, but smart upkeep is the real MVP here. Sounds like you've nailed it.

Can't argue with the importance of regular upkeep, but honestly, sometimes luck plays a bigger role than we like to admit. My neighbor's HVAC was meticulously maintained—filters changed religiously, annual tune-ups, the whole nine yards—and it still kicked the bucket after just 12 years. Meanwhile, my brother-in-law barely remembers he even has a furnace, let alone changes filters regularly, and his system's pushing 25 years without a hiccup. Go figure.

Not saying maintenance isn't crucial (it definitely helps), but sometimes you just get a unit built like a tank or one that's a lemon from day one. I've seen both extremes firsthand. So yeah, smart upkeep matters, but let's not underestimate plain old dumb luck either...

- Totally agree that luck can swing things either way. I've seen similar stuff happen with appliances too.
- Had a fridge I babied for years—cleaned coils, checked seals, the works—and it died after 8 years. Meanwhile, my parents' ancient fridge from the '90s is still humming along without any special care.
- Maintenance definitely helps your odds, but sometimes you just get lucky (or unlucky) with the build quality. Seems like newer stuff isn't built to last as long anyway...

I've seen plenty of newer appliances hold up surprisingly well, honestly. Sure, some older stuff was built like tanks, but we also tend to romanticize the past a bit. I've remodeled homes where the owners had new-ish HVAC systems running strong for over 15 years, and others where a brand-new unit gave out in just a few. From what I've seen, it's less about "new vs old" and more about finding reputable brands and models known for quality. Luck matters, but choosing wisely upfront can tip the odds. Also, installation quality makes a huge difference—I've seen some rushed installs shave years off an appliance's lifespan.

- Had a similar experience myself—my HVAC just hit 18 years and still going strong.
- Honestly, I think regular maintenance has been key. I change filters religiously and had it serviced every couple years.
- Agree that installation matters big-time. My neighbor got a new system installed hastily, and it barely lasted 5 years.
- Luck plays a role, sure, but smart choices and upkeep seem to make the biggest difference in my experience...
