Spacing screws closer definitely helps—I noticed the same thing when I redid my basement walls last summer. I initially went with the standard 16-inch spacing, but ended up with noticeable flex and a few annoying dents. After adjusting to around 12 inches, it made a huge difference in stability. You're right about stud alignment too...it's surprising how much those small details matter. Did you find any difference using drywall thickness? I've always stuck with half-inch, but I'm curious if thicker drywall would add even more durability or if it's just overkill. Anyway, good job figuring it out through trial and error—sometimes that's the best way to learn this stuff.

Funny you mention that—I had a similar experience when I redid our guest room. Started with standard half-inch drywall, but after my kids managed to put a basketball-sized dent in it (don't ask...), I switched to 5/8-inch for repairs. Honestly, the thicker drywall felt noticeably sturdier and quieter too. Might be worth trying next time you're doing walls, especially in high-traffic areas or rooms prone to random indoor sports disasters...
